It began with a question

Early in my career, while running multiple programs for Fortune 500 companies, I was driving home thinking about the projects under my management. A simple question came to mind. Why is this company doing these projects in the first place? Where do they come from? Who decides which projects to pursue, and why these?

The next day, I asked a vice president. The answer was that the chief technology officer wanted them done.

Later, I asked the chief information officer. He explained that every few years, an outside expert reviewed the department and recommended a portfolio of projects. That portfolio then went into the budget for approval.

The answers explained how projects were selected. They left my original question unanswered. How did those projects connect to the purpose of the organization?

That question changed the direction of my career.

Across industries, I began to see a structure connecting organizational vision to goals, portfolios, programs and projects. Yet the connection was often difficult to explain or defend. In conversations with experienced project managers, I repeatedly encountered the same gap. They knew what they were delivering, but could not clearly explain the strategic reason for delivering it.

I wanted to make that connection explicit, measurable and usable in everyday decisions.

The experience behind the product

Mirza brings 20 years of experience delivering large programs for Fortune 500 organizations, spanning enterprise strategy, program delivery, portfolio governance and technology leadership.

He holds the Program Management Professional (PgMP) and Project Management Professional (PMP) credentials from the Project Management Institute.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Technology Management from Mercer University.

He serves as Board Chair of SAF International.

GEMAXIOM grew from the questions he encountered while leading complex initiatives, and his conviction that leaders should be able to explain how work and investment serve the strategy.

The framework and the book

That work became Organizational Goals Management and its working structure, the Goals Execution Matrix.

Together, they connect vision and goals to the portfolios, programs, projects and measures intended to deliver them. The framework gives leaders a structure for examining whether work serves a strategic purpose, whether initiatives reinforce or conflict with each other, and where investment needs reconsideration.

The framework is presented in the forthcoming book, The System for Breakthrough Execution. The book gives executives a practical method for structuring and governing strategy execution.
